Yes, the Folding Field Sharpener (FFS) is a versatile tool that can sharpen any knife or blade. While it was designed and optimized for use in the field on tools like hunting knives, pocket knives, and EDCs, it will work on anything from kitchen knives to scissors.

Our sharpeners are intended to be used dry with the exception of the Whetstone. Introducing oil can cause oxidation or rust. Water can as well, if water is introduced please dry as quickly as possible to avoid any damage.

On the bottom of the Base directly under the Work Sharp logo there are some oval ribs. You can lightly clamp over the top of them. If it is clamped to hard you run the risk of breaking the Base. I also do not recommend clamping the PA down since the knife is clamped and held rigidly in the sharpener. It can bump the knife which could potentially cause harm.

A petroleum-based product is best.

Yes. The abrasives are peel-and-stick and easy to replace. Just remove the O-ring and Tri-Brasive, peel off the old abrasive, clean the surface, apply the new one, press firmly, and reinstall — grit label facing forward and O-ring back in place.

Lifespan varies by steel type, pressure, and use. On average, expect around 100 sharpenings for heavy-use EDC knives and 250–350 for kitchen knives. With light pressure and proper technique, they can last up to 500 sharpenings.

Light pressure is most effective, which is why we designed the grip to be so small. This helps your body naturally adjust to using less pressure.

Diamond plates: Brush or blow clean, or rinse with water and dry quickly to prevent rust.

 Ceramic plate: Wipe with a damp cloth — greying is normal and won’t affect performance.

Yes, on large blades, it is preferable to simply remove your clamp module, flip and reinstall. Be mindful of the cutting edge at all times, sharpen safely!

An 8" blade sharpens easily, and up to a 10" chef’s knife is possible. However, only about 2½" of the abrasive contacts the blade, so it’s less efficient. For best results, use the up-and-down stroke shown in the manual and sharpen in sections, re-clamping as needed.

The maximum thickness the clamp can hold is a blade that is 3/16". If your blade is thicker than that, you can remove the TriBrasive & sharpen freehand if desired.

Yes, it would be okay to use a silicon dry film lubricant on the rod. Please do not introduce any lubricants with solvents, as that could damage the plastics.

For small blades, extend the blade slightly farther from the clamp for a secure hold. Use a marker to check your bevel and adjust as needed. Very small knives may require a slightly higher angle (around 17°–19°).
