Standard Replacement Kit for the Knife & Tool Sharpener Mk. 2

I purchased this Standard Replacement Kit as a backup for my Knife & Tool Sharpener Mk. 2. The sharpener itself has been one of the best tool purchases I've made—it has already paid for itself by restoring the edges on my knives as well as my wife's kitchen knives.

While I haven't needed to use this replacement kit yet, I picked it up to have on hand when the original components eventually wear out. Based on how well the Mk. 2 has performed so far, I expect these genuine replacement parts to help keep the sharpener working at its best for years to come.

I dragged my sharpening kit out of the closet after being distracted by life for a few years. I put on a series of I have an older sharpener and proceeded through the sequence when suddenly the band broke with a snap and landed a few inches from the sharpener machine. That had not happened to me before. Then a few minutes later it happened again! Over the next 20 minutes, it happened five more times. That stumped me. What was causing the various sharpening bands to snap in the machine after only brief use? I ordered a new set of sharpening bands but I have not resumed the project because I figure I am doing something wrong, but I have no idea what that could be. I am doing the sharpening in exactly the same manner as in the past. Am I forgetting a centering adjustment or something?
